August 16, 2007Today we spent the day in Nashville at Vanderbilt Hospital, getting a second (third, fourth?) opinion about this precious baby. He is pictured with his very pretty doctor at Vanderbilt, Dr. Woods. She thinks he is doing great! She thinks that he is already actually making his own platelets, because donor platelets only last 4 to 5 days at most, and 6 days after his last transfusion his number was 50,000. She also explained that the 29,000 taken the next day was also very good, because platelet levels vary in everyone from time to time and day to day. They do not get concerned until platelet levels are under 10,000 and even then she assured us that only 1 in 100,000 people with platelet level under 10,000 have bleeding.
He will go back on Tuesday, August 21, for a transfusion if necessary. Several doctors were involved with him today and all feel that the remaining number of transfusions necessary are limited...........they feel we're almost home-free.
A very good day!
